When Should Your Daughter Be Allowed To Colour Her Hair?

Travelling With Teens – Negotiating The Superhighway To Adulthood

Girls want to grow up so fast…….When can I colour my hair mum?

For a very long time I have been a bottle blonde, even a red head for a few winters, but I honestly can’t remember the first time I coloured my hair, so that was no help in me making the decision to allow my girls to dabble in the world of altered appearances.

I am a believer in helping girls to fit in with the crowd, but I draw lines at many things, and like to try and find a happy ground somewhere in the middle of these types of questions!

One Christmas, my mother, who had streaks in her hair FOREVER, hurt her back and could not sit in the hair dressers chair, but refused to allow re-growth to spoil her holiday, so in desperation, we grabbed a home streaking kit from the supermarket and I did it for her. It worked out really well, and with a little of the left over bleach I put a few ‘highlights’ in mine…..so started the home colouring revolution, saved a fortune, albeit with a mistake or two along the way…..

SO, when Miss WW number 1 decided she wanted to change things, I few little highlights with left over bleach from my make over made her very happy and I could cope with that small alteration. She was 14 at the time. She is now 16 and a full blonde thanks to the bottle, as she is a ‘physie’ girl and blonde looks better on the floor at competition time.

Miss WW number 2 is 12 and posed the same question and got the same response, 4 light foils kept her happy too. During the last holidays, she went red, with the help of a 8 wash tint. She enjoyed it over the break but when she went back to school she looked normal again.

A little step in their favour, not too much that I couldn’t cope, and they are both happy, that is always my main goal!

Miss WW No 2, turns 13 tomorrow, and is talking about going a deep chocolate brown (she has lightish brown hair now), and I am liking the sound of that!

How did you deal with this one?
