Possums are really cute, and I don’t mind them hanging around in the trees at night, but I am not very happy that they choose to snack on the beautiful new spring growth on my citrus trees! My poor lime tree is looking like a stick montage instead of a glorious ball of green with little limes in production.
Desperate measures of using chicken wire to keep them off certain plants, simply provided an easy access climbing tool for the little fur balls and really look ugly. Time for plan B.
Without wanting to hurt them, just deter them, I went searching for a natural solution, that would help me keep them away from selected plants and still allow them the freedom to live on my lot.
Homemade Possum Plant Protector
In a small container that can be sealed, mix equal parts of Vaseline and Vicks VapoRub.
Stir well until combined.
Use a knife to spread this mixture around areas where you want to keep possums away from. I put it on the rim of pot plants. If you have possums that like to make their home in your roof, try putting this mixture around the access points. Reapply every few days or after rain.
So simple, and so far the new shoots on my lime tree are still there. 🙂

That sounds like a great trick. They can be such a pest can’t they! We are just establishing our orchard, so far we have only had frost problems, and water logging, no wild-life worries yet, but the bush is close by, so I’ll be sure to remember your recipe. Thanks! xx
Umm so I’m from NZ where these creatures are an introduced species and wreck havoc with our natives, so I know a thing or two about stopping possums from eating stuff!
