How To Wear Fake Earrings Without Getting Sore Ears.

A beautiful pair of earrings can be the difference between your outfit looking bland or brilliant!

No matter what statement you are trying to make, a great pair of ‘fake’ earrings is an affordable way to express your individuality, until you have had them in for a couple of hours and the pain starts. You don’t want to take them out so you persevere and for the next few days you pay the price for a few hours of glam.

With lot’s of girls in our house, there are lot’s of pairs of earrings!

Most of the time I wear real gold or silver for everyday wear and I have never got sore ears, as long as I keep it real.

But I like bling, and dangle and colourful and shiny and I don’t like sore ears.

Determined not to let the fake’s win, I did a little research, and a few experiements.
The end result is being able to wear fake earrings as often as I want, with no pain or inflamation, winning!

The first suggestion that I found was to coat the earring hook or post with a little vaseline. This creates a barrier and helps to stop inflamation and pain.

As I am not a big fan of vaseline because it is petroleum based, I wanted a healthier alternative. Hit the jackpot with none other than the product of the moment that everyone can’t seem to get enough of…..coconut oil!

Simply dip a cotton tip into coconut oil and apply to your earrings. I have even gone one step further by adding one drop of Lavender pure essential oil to the cotton tip, as it has incredible anti-inflammatory properties, is soothing for anything skin related and helps stop the development of scare tissue.

I have not had sore ears in months now, and one of my favourite pairs of earrings, large square crystals that are on fake posts and I can now wear them for days on end with no irritation.

Try it and see, works a treat!

Note – adding vaseline or coconut oil to your earrings does make them slippery and increases your chances of them falling out. I now save those little plastic backs that come on hook earrings to keep them safely on the display cards instore. Keeps your earrings safely in place perfectly.

  1. Thanks for the tip! I occasionally get sore ears from wearing fake earrings. If I wear them a couple of days in a row they start to hurt. I will be using the coconut oil next time I wear them. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Great idea! I get really sensitised to all metals and it has grown worse with each child I have had (eczema symptoms). My 13 year old daughter has also has persistent ear infections since she got hers pierced. Will have to try this!

  3. What clever little tips! I haven’t worn fake earrings in a long time. But I do often take a break from wearing any earrings. Just a few days sans earrings. I also clean my earrings on a regular basis ~ helps keeping ears from getting sore too xx Josefa #teamIBOT

  4. I’ve just started having adverse affects when wearing fake earrings, so I shall try this out. I’ve also heard that clear nail varnish is great as well.

  5. I love ‘fake’ earrings, as you said they show your individuality, I have these really cute kettle earrings but they hurt my ears, also my friend made me some cute little coat hangers and I am currently wearing them as earrings but I’m pretty sure they won’t keep my ears nice so I’m going to try this when I get home.
    Thanks for the tip.

  6. I will definitely try this.

Another thing I have found to work is to paint the backs of the ear rings with a thin clear coat of nail polish.

  7. I also have the same problem, but I use another approach. Its just as easy, and I can wear fake earrings all day with no allergic reactions of any sort. I first soak the earrings in hydrogen peroxide for about 5 minutes or so. By then, you’ll see bubbles all around the earring. Afterwards, I soak them in rubbing alcohol for a few minutes.
With this it sanitizes the earrings, while also decreasing the likeliness of them falling out unlike applying oil.

    1. I would worry that using hydrogen peroxide might affect the metallic coatings on fake jewellery, but if it does not do that, then you are on a winner!

  8. I just coated my fake earrings with clear nail polish and will add Vaseline on them tomorrow when they dry up. I donโ€™t know if itโ€™ll work but Iโ€™m gonna give it a try and see. I love my big hoops and wear them everyday.

  9. Wow, this post has given me useful info and answered some of my questions. I hope to give something back and aid others like you helped me. Feel free to surf my website Seoranko about Blogging.
